2007 English Australia/John Gallagher Memorial Professional Bursary Winner
14-09-2007

Phoenix Academy would like to congratulate Maire Gorman who is the recipient of the 2007 English Australia/John Gallagher Memorial Professional Bursary.

English Australia is the representative body for English Language Colleges in Australia, and in 2003 created the award to recognise those who have made significant contributions to the ELICOS sector.

Ms Gorman, has been working within the ELICOS sector for 16 years in the area of student services. Employed at Phoenix Academy in 1991 to fill a 3-week casual vacancy in Homestay Marie's employment turned into a permanent one.

Marie's experience in ELICOS is both extensive and diverse. Having joined Phoenix during it's initial growth stages Marie has held a range of responsibilities including the full gamut of student services including:

· Admissions
· Student Counselling
· Recreation
· Academic Administration

Her most recent role as Manager Accommodation Services, which she has held for the past 12 years, has been the most important for the ELICOS Student Services division in Western Australia and also at Phoenix Academy.

Mrs Robynne Walsh, principal of Phoenix Academy, said that, “Student services are the backbone of the ELICOS industry and usually these are the wonderful people who work away tirelessly behind the scenes. The impact of Marie's efforts often go unnoticed and for this reason, it is time to recognise her efforts and achievements.”

Marie has had a significant input in the advancement of policies and procedures relating to student welfare arrangements in Western Australia. As a long-standing and well-respected member of the Council for International Students of Western Australia (CISWA), Marie has been a leader in the creation and implementation of the Best Practice Guidelines for Carers of Minors in Western Australia.

These policies and guidelines have been adopted and implemented throughout all schools catering to the International student market, namely in ELICOS throughout the state and set a precedent for best practice throughout Australia.

Marie's breadth of experience and eye for detail ensures at all times that all students, minors and adults are adequately cared for in both Homestay and other accommodation arrangements. She manages a database of over 700 families that are systematically reviewed and screened to minimise all risks, and is also responsible for the placement of students over 2 campuses.
