Frequently Asked Questions

(1) Why should I do the Preparation for IELTS General Module Course?

Answer: Very recently the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) introduced some new changes that are related to evidence of English language competency. The Temporary Business Visa (457) now requires employees to demonstrate an IELTS level of 4.5 before their 457 visas will be renewed.

For Graduates applying for the 497 Visa they will receive an extra 25 points towards Residency if they can demonstrate that they have achieved an IELTS level of 7.0.

The Preparation for IELTS General Module Course will dramatically improve the chances that test candidates have of achieving their desired IELTS goal.

The course teaches you the IELTS test strategies and techniques. Knowing these strategies is a very important aspect of passing the test.

(2) Who is eligible to enrol in the IELTS General Module Course at Phoenix?

Answer: The course is open to almost everyone. There are two levels available:

Level 1 for people with Elementary to Pre-Intermediate abilities in English -this equates to an IELTS level of 2 up until 4.5. These are clients who need to pass the IELTS at level 4.5 in order to renew their 457 Work Visa. The 457 visa usually last for 4 years and as of July 1st 2007 when a current 457 visa expires employees will have to show evidence of an IELTS score of 4.5 or higher in order for the DIAC (Department of Immigration and Citizenship) to renew their visa.

Level 2 for people with Intermediate and higher abilities in English which equates to an IELTS level of 5.0 to 7. These are the clients who have met the academic requirements for the 497 Graduate Visa and in order to be eligible for the full 25 points allocated for evidence of English proficiency towards their premanent residency application need to pass the IELTS at a level 7.

(3) Do I have to sit a test to enter the course?

Answer: No, not normally. When you enrol we will ascertain your reason for entering the course and will ask you for some evidence such as how long you have been working or studying in Australia. This should be enough for us to determine whether you are eligible to enter the course.

(4) What will I study in the course?

Answer: The six-week course (18 hours in total) will concentrate on training you in the main skills required to pass the IELTS exam at the level you require. The course covers all four skills of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. You will have lots of opportunity to practise old IELTS tests and to practice IELTS Interview techniques.

(5) What is the difference between the IELTS General Training Module and the Academic Module?

Answer: The Listening and Speaking components of the two tests are exactly the same. For the Writing component one question is the same and this is the Essay Writing. For the second Writing question on the Academic module the candidate must describe a graph or diagram and for the General module the candidate must Write a Letter. For the Reading test both modules have three sections with 40 multiple choice and short answer questions the only difference is the context of the texts.

(6) Who will be my teachers?

Answer: The Phoenix trainers are all professional fully qualified teachers of English as a Second Language. Many of them have been teaching at Phoenix for many years and are also fully qualified IELTS Examiners so they know the examination format very well.

(7) What other activities will I have during the course?

Answer: You will have Reading and Writing training and practice (one and a half hours each week) and Oral Interaction (one and a half hours each week) you will also have to do at least 2-3 hours of homework each week. We will also introduce you to a buddy student. We suggest you meet up with your buddy once or twice during the week for conversation practice.

(8) How will I be assessed during the course?

Answer: During the course your English assessment will be based on 100% continuous assessment. We will advise you when we believe you are at the level ready to pass the IELTS at your required level. We will also assist you with your application to do your IELTS test.

(9) If I am Sponsoring my Empolyee to undertake this course will I receive any feedback on their progress.

Answer: Absolutely, provided your Employee agrees to have his/her grades released then you will receive a full written report covering progress and attendance at the completion of each 6-week course.

(10) How long is the Course?

Answer: The course runs in 6-week modules you will be required to enrol in a minimum of 6 weeks. You may only need 6 weeks to get to your required level or you may need to do 12 weeks. You need to pay for 6 weeks in advance and commit to studying for this minimum period.

(11) What size are the classes and where are they held?

Answer: The size of the classes average around 12-14 students. All classes are held at the Phoenix Leederville campus at 223 Vincent Street Leederville (Opposite Beatty Park Aquatic Centre).

(12) How much does the Course cost and how long are the Lessons?

Answer: The course costs $360 for 6 weeks. The Lesson times are 9.10-12.30 with a 20-minute break in the middle of the morning.

(13) What are the commencement dates for the course?

Answer: New courses start every 6 weeks. The next course dates are Saturday 4th August, 15th September, 3rd November, and 5th January 2008.

(14) Tell me about the Phoenix Young Learners English Classes?

Answer: For children aged 6 years to 12 years there are English Classes available where children can improve their English skills with a fully qualified English Teacher. The cost for the Young Learners English classes is $35 per child per morning or $60 for 2 children from the same family. These classes are held at the same location and at the same time as the IELTS Preparation classes.

(14) How do I enrol in the Preparation for IELTS General Module Course?
